Sight Flow Indicators

A sight flow indicator - also called a sight glass flow indicator - is a pipeline window that shows you at a glance whether media is moving, how fast, and whether its color or clarity has changed. The SG-200 series pairs a machined stainless body with a flapper, rotary, ball or drip tube element, so flow verification needs no power, no wiring and no calibration.

What Is a Sight Flow Indicator?

A sight flow indicator is a transparent section of process line - typically a stainless body with a glass window - that contains a mechanical element driven by the media itself. Flapper types rise with flow, rotors spin with velocity, balls lift off their seat when liquid moves, and drip tubes meter slow trickles. Because the indicator is purely mechanical, there is nothing to power, configure or calibrate: the answer to "is this line flowing?" is a one-second visual check.

Indicators are specified wherever operators need fast, continuous confirmation without adding instrumentation cost: pump seal flush lines, cooling water returns, CIP circuits, solvent dosing and lubrication lines. They complement - not replace - electronic flow transmitters, giving plant staff a direct physical confirmation that a loop failure cannot hide.

Ball and drip tube indicators answer the yes/no flow question; flapper indicators add a rough flow-rate readout; rotary indicators give the liveliest signal on larger lines. All four use the same SG-200 body, so you can change the element style without changing the pipe connection.

Tri-Clamp (Sanitary)

Tri-clamp ferrules from 1/2" to 6" suit food, beverage and pharmaceutical lines where the indicator must come apart for CIP and sterilization. Clamped connections leave no threaded crevices for product to hide in.

Threaded

Male NPT or BSP ends from 1/4" to 2" are the compact, low-cost choice for utility lines, skids and instrumentation tubing. Threaded mountings suit higher pressures and smaller bores with the same body.

Flanged

ANSI or DIN flanges up to 6" suit larger process lines and media that cannot tolerate thread restrictions. Flanged indicators bolt directly into existing piping spools. Weld-end versions are available for permanent installation.

GLASS SELECTION

Borosilicate vs Soda Lime Glass

The window is the part that does the seeing, and the SG-200 ships with two standard glass options. Borosilicate glass to DIN 7080 is the default for process service: it resists thermal shock, stands up to chemical attack and runs to 500F (260C). Soda lime glass costs less and is fine for low-temperature, low-pressure utility duty, but it tolerates far less thermal shock - so it is not recommended for steam-traced or hot process lines.

Treat the glass as a consumable: thermal cycling, vibration and impact can chip or crack it. Inspect windows during routine maintenance and replace any glass with a visible flaw before it leaks. Every SG-200 ships with spare gaskets and a documented replacement procedure.

Where Sight Flow Indicators Are Used

SG-200 indicators earn their place wherever flow must be verified continuously without instrumentation cost:

  • Chemical dosing and additive lines - confirm pump stroke and product flow in chemical processing plants.
  • Cooling water and heat-transfer circuits - confirm circulation before a pump trips on low flow.
  • Pump seal flush and lubrication systems - a stopped flush line means a dry seal; the indicator makes it visible.
  • CIP and washdown returns in food plants, plus pharmaceutical utility lines where the hygienic tri-clamp version is standard.
